Tabot Festival
Tabot festival is a pinnacle in Bengkulu tourism which has been categories as a major event on the National Calendar of event. This festival consist of two major activities, which are: Tabot Ritual Ceremony and some support activities such as:
- Cultural performances on the opening and the closing of Tabot ceremony
- Traditional sport competition/games : Ikan-ikan; Telong-telong; Tokok Doi
- Carnaval,
- Bazaar and exhibition,
- Tabot beauty pageant competition
- Nasyid
- Rabana
- Sarafal Anam
- Islamic Poetry
- Islamic Fashion Show with Kain Besurek
- Colouring competition for kindergarten pupils
- Drawing/painting competition for elementary pupils
Activities dates:
Tabot festival is going to be held for about 10 days, that will start on the 1 Muharam until 10 Muharam in the Islamic Calendar (Hijriyah) or fell on 9 – 19 January 2008.
Place of the events:
Tabot festival will be held around Tapak Padri Area, Bengkulu City,
Ritual Procession:
- The recital of The Holy Qur’an with Mufakat is performed at Tabot Imam and Tabot Bangsal location, from 16:00 – 18:00, followed by Pengambilan Tanah (Land Taking) ceremony at Gerga Nala and Gerga Benteng which will be performed before 1 Muharam (9 January 2008) as a sign for the opening of Tabot ritual.
- Duduk Penja Ceremony and Pencucuian Jari-jari (Fingers Cleansing) will be held on 4 Muharam (13 Januari 2008) from 4:00 pm – 21:30 pm located at Tabot Imam and Tabot Bangsal. This ceremony is an extension from the Pengambilan Tanah procession (Land Taking).
- Menjara I Ceremony is going to be performed on 5 Muharam (14 January 2008) from 7:30 pm – 8:00 pm with Tabot Bangsal visiting Tabot Imam and bonfire activity that will take place on Tabot Imam, Tabot Bangsal and Tabot Padri.
- Menjara II Ceremony is performed in 6 Muharam (15 January 2008) from 19:30 – 22:00 pm which is located at Tabot Imam, Tabot Padri and Tabot Bangsal.In the second ceremony, as an act in response, Tabot Imam will be visiting Tabot Bangsal which followed by a ritual attraction and a torch parade from Talbot Bangsal to Tapak Padri.
- Penja procession (Arak Jari-jari)
- Upacara Arak Sorban (Turban procession)is performed in 8 Muharam (17 January 2008) from 19:30 pm – 20:00,located at Panggung Hiburan Tapak Padri.
- Gam day, is one of the series of activities of Tabot ceremony which is free from any activity. On 9 Muharam ( 18 January) is the period this Gam, from 6:00 – 17:00 pm, that all the activities is related to the ceremony of Talbot including sounding Dol and Tessa are not allowed to be conducted at that time until the Pangkek has arise.
- Tabot Naik Pangkek, assembling the top of Tabot construction in every area, followed by The Soja activity, from 14:00 – 17:00.
- Arak Gendang, every Tabot from every area are being gathered to Tapak Padri on 9 Muharam (18 January 2008), from 18:00 – 21:00.
- Tabot bersanding, every Tabot construction is being located at Tapak Padri. This activity is performed on 9 Muharam (18 Januari 2009), from 19:00 – 24:00.
- Talbot Bersanding, Every Talbot construction put through at Tapak Padri location. This activity is performed from 9 Muharam (18 January 2008), from 7:30 pm – Midnight.
- Tabot Terbuang, The last event of ceremony series of Tabot ceremony which is going to performed on 10 Muharam ( 19 Januariy 2008), from 7:00 am - 3:30pm. All tabots are gathered from Gedung Daerah where Tabot Soja gave a salutation to Tabot Imam and Tabot Bangsal.This parade is the last procession before departing to Padang (Field) Karbala for following a Tabot delegation ceremony and make a devotional visit to the grave of Syach Burhanudin Syahbedan Abdullah was buried.

A ceremony held to commemorate the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grand
children, Hasan and Husein in the Karbala war, in the defence of the Moslem religion.
Horse races, swimming contest, beach festival and art performance are also part of
the event.
